Exposição “Guerra e Paz” de Portinari

Em 1952 o então secretário geral da ONU, Sr.Trygve Li, sugeriu que os países membros fizessem uma contribuição cultural para a sede da ONU que estava sendo construída. O  governo brasileiro presenteou  a ONU com os painéis Guerra e Paz que foram pintados sob encomenda por Cândido Portinari.  In 1952 the UN secretary general, Sr.Trygve Li suggested that the countries members would make a cultural donation to the UN headquarters that was being built. The Brazilian government gave to the UN the painting War and Peace by Candido Portinari.

Os gigantescos painéis com 14 metros de altura e 10 metros de largura foram pintados em um galpão da TV Tupi no Rio de Janeiro. Portinari fez mais de 150 estudos e pintou 14 painéis durante os dois anos preparatórios para pintar Guerra e Paz. Os painéis ficaram prontos em 1956 e expostos no Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro antes de embarcarem para Nova York.The huge panels 14 meters by 10 meters were painted in a shed of TV Tupi in Rio de Janeiro. Portinari did ​​more than 150 studies 14 paintings and spent almost two years preparing studies to paint War and Peace. It was finished in 1956 and was exhibited at  Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro before it departure to New York.

Devido a uma reforma no prédio das Nações Unidas que teve início em 2010 e terminará em 2013, o Projeto Portinari conseguiu que os painéis retornassem ao Brasil para serem restaurados e expostos ao público durante este período. Due to renovation at the UN building which started in 2010 and will end in 2013, Portinari Project managed to bring the paintings back to Brazil to be restored and displayed to the public during this period.

Os painéis "Guerra e Paz"

A exposição itinerante está em São Paulo e além dos painéis há cerca de 100 estudos preparatórios feitos pelo pintor assim como recortes de jornais da época e alguns objetos pessoais.  A exposição irá para Paris, Tóquio e Oslo antes de retornar para a ONU. The exhibition is in São Paulo at the moment and apart from the paintings War and Peace there are around 100  preparatory studies made ​​by Portinari as well as newspaper clippings and some personal belongings. The exhibition will travel to Paris, Tokyo and Oslo before returning to the United Nations.

Eu na entrada da sede da ONU

Quando estive em Nova York, em 2006, visitei a sede da ONU e tive a oportunidade de ver os painéis de Portinari. Fiquei feliz por poder revê-los aqui em São Paulo. Sem dúvida uma exposição maravilhosa. When I was in New York in 2006, I visited the UN headquarters and I had the opportunity to see it there. I was happy to have the chance to see it again here in São Paulo. No doubt it is a wonderful exhibition.
