A riqueza do Vaticano

A primeira vez que estive na Itália foi em 1997. Naquela época eu morava em Londres e o meu irmão tinha ido me visitar e  fomos juntos para Roma. No Vaticano tivemos a oportunidade de participar de uma missa rezada pelo Papa João Paulo II. The first time I went to Italy was in 1997. At that time I was living in London and my brother had gone to visit me. We went together to Rome. In the Vatican we had the opportunity to attend a Mass with Pope John Paul II.

Em 2008 estive em Roma e visitei novamente os museus do Vaticano, a Capela Sistina e a Basílica de São Pedro. As filas são enormes, há milhares de turistas e apreciar as obras exige paciência. Eu gosto muito da biblioteca do Vaticano que não concentra tantos visitantes como na Capela Sistina. Durante a minha última visita à biblioteca houve um momento que somente eu e um rapaz estávamos lá, aquilo era inédito e pedi para ele me fotografar.I n 2008 I was again in Rome and visited the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. The queues are huge, there are thousands of tourists and to enjoy the masterpieces requires patience. I really like the Vatican library that does not have as many visitors as in the Sistine Chapel. During my last visit to the library there was a moment that I and a guy were the only people there. I asked him to take a picture of me because this was unbelievable.

No início de cada galeria o comércio é intenso e estão à venda livros, postais, objetos e uma infinidade de reproduções e miniaturas das obras do Vaticano. The galleries that take visitors to the Sistine Chapel are vast with walls covered with tapestry, maps and precious works. It is hard shooting because of the crowd that walks on the corridors. At the entrance of each gallery there is a shop that sells books, postcards, objects, and a multitude of miniature of the works from the Vatican.

Fotografei algumas cúpulas e os tetos das galerias que são belíssimos. I took picture of some domes and ceilings of the galleries that are so beautiful.

Para visitar apenas uma parte do Vaticano é preciso um dia inteiro. Comecei a minha visita assim que os portões foram abertos. Almocei no restaurante do Vaticano e no final da tarde depois de ter andado muito resolvi visitar o túmulo do Papa João Paulo II. A fila para comprar o ingresso era imensa e a previsão era de pelo menos umas duas horas para chegar até o túmulo. To visit the Vatican you need a whole day. I began my visit as soon as the gates were opened. I had lunch at Vatican’s restaurant and late in the afternoon after I had walked all day long I decided to visit the tomb of Pope John Paul II. The queue to buy tickets was huge and it would take me at least two hours to reach the tomb.

Então decidi subir na Cúpula do Vaticano porque a fila para comprar o ingresso era menor. No Vaticano o único lugar que não é cobrada a entrada é a Basílica de São Pedro. Na bilheteria havia um cartaz informando que após tomar o elevador seriam mais 320 degraus até o alto da Cúpula. So I decided to climb the dome of the Vatican because the queue to buy the ticket was not too big. In the Vatican the only place that entry is not charged is the Basilica of St. Peter. A poster at the ticket window stated that after taking the lift it would be 320 steps to the top of the dome.
 

Eu já tinha andado o dia inteiro, fazia muito calor e mesmo assim resolvi subir porque não tinha idéia do quanto seria difícil. Os degraus são minúsculos e à medida que o topo da cúpula se aproxima as paredes vão se inclinando é preciso subir agachado. A ventilação é precária e como há outras pessoas subindo em fila indiana não dá para voltar, a única alternativa é seguir em frente. Confesso que rezei mais durante aquela subida do que enquanto estive dentro da Basílica de São Pedro. Muito ofegante conseguir chegar até o fim. A vista lá do alto é maravilhosa e para descer todo Santo ajuda!  I decided to go up even though I had walked the entire day and it was very hot. I had no idea about the difficulty to get there. The steps are tiny and as the top of the dome approaches the walls start to curve and I had to lean and crouch. Ventilation is poor and as there are more people climbing one cannot go back, the only way is to move forward. I confess that I prayed more while I was climbing the dome than when I was inside the Basilica of St. Peter. I got to the top breathless but the view was wonderful. To get back to the ground was much easier.
