Dez anos após a descoberta da
cidade dos Incas, Machu Picchu, foi iniciada a construção em 1911 de uma
ferrovia que ligaria a cidadela a estação de Chaullay. In 1911, ten
years after the Inca’s city Machu Picchu was found, a railway that would link Machu
Picchu to Chaullay’s station started to be built.
Águas Calientes ou Povoado de
Machu Picchu inicialmente era o acampamento dos operários que trabalhavam na construção
da ferrovia. Todas as máquinas que foram usadas na execução do projeto também
eram mantidas nesta região. Águas Calientes or Machu Picchu
Pueblo was previously the place where the workers who were constructing the
railway used to camp. All the equipment necessary to carry on the project was
also kept in this region.
O povoado vive basicamente do
turismo e tudo o que é consumido ou vendido lá é trazido de Cusco. Os preços são
altos e uma garrafa de água, por exemplo, chega a custar quatro vezes mais do
que em Cusco. The village’s income
is mainly from tourism and whatever is consumed or sold there comes from Cusco.
It is expensive there and a bottle of water, for example, can cost four times more
than in Cusco.
As montanhas cercam o povoado que tem ruas estreitas e charmosas. The village is surrounded by
mountains.The streets are narrow and charming.
A sonoridade do rio que desce a
montanha cortando o povoado lembra uma cachoeira. The sound of
the river down the mountain running through the village reminds a waterfall.
O caminho até as piscinas termais
de Águas Calientes é uma pequena subida que exige um esforço considerável por
causa da altitude. 
O ingresso custa USD 4.00 e roupas de banho podem ser alugadas.
Acredita-se que devido à temperatura elevada e a grande concentração de enxofre
nas águas as mesmas podem curar reumatismo
e doenças dermatológicas. Preferi não entrar nas piscinas. The way up to the

dia agradável andando pelo povoado até que chegou o anoitecer. I spent a wonderful day walking around
the village until it got dark.
