Sopa de Salmão no porto de Helsinki

A praça do mercado fica em frente ao porto de Helsinki e lá são vendidos produtos artesanais e comida preparada na hora. The market square is opposite to the port of Helsinki and there one can buy handcrafts and food.

Eu tinha acabado de voltar de um passeio de barco e resolvi almoçar no mercado. Havia uma variedade grande de frutos do mar, vegetais e sopas. Eu adoro provar comidas diferentes nas minhas viagens e optei por uma sopa de salmão que eu não conhecia. A sopa é feita com batatas, pedaços de salmão, creme de leite e umas ervas aromáticas, simplesmente deliciosa.

I had just returned from a tour boat and decided to have lunch in the market. There was a large variety of seafood, vegetables and soups. I love to taste different food while I am travelling and I chose to have salmon soup as I had never tasted it. The soup is made with potatoes, chunks of salmon, cream and some fresh herbs. It was very tasty.

Andando pelo que mercado que se parece com uma feira livre brasileira, encontrei uma senhora que desenvolveu gorros com um designer bem particular. Ela usa 5 agulhas simultaneamente para fazer os gorros . Walking through the market that looks like the street market in Brazil, I met a lady who developed an interesting knitwear. She uses five needles simultaneously to knit the hoods.

Os objetos de vidro estão presentes por todo o mercado. The glass objects are found throughout the market.

Helsinki é uma cidade extremamente limpa e organizada. No final do dia passei novamente pela praça do mercado e havia dois caminhões lavando a calçada. No chão praticamente não tinha lixo e não existe nenhum odor típico de áreas portuárias na praça do mercado. Helsinki is a very clean and organized city. At the end of the day I passed by the marketplace and there were two trucks cleaning it. On the ground there was very little rubbish and the marketplace does not smell the typical odor of port areas.

Helsinki vista do mar

Ontem fiz um passeio de barco para ver o outro lado de Helsinki e algumas ilhas próximas. A duração do passeio foi de 1h30 e o custo 20 Euros. Yesterday I went on a boat trip to see the other side of Helsinki and some nearby islands. The duration of the tour was 1:30 and cost 20 Euros.

 Passamos pelos galpões nos quais os navios quebra gelo são produzidos. A Finlândia é líder mundial neste setor. We passed by the area in which the ice breaking ships are produced. Finland is a world leader in this sector.

Todo o transporte de mercadorias entre a Suécia e a Finlândia é feito por duas linhas de navios, a Viking e a Silja que transportam também veículos pesados como caminhões carregados e passageiros. All shipping of goods between Sweden and Finland is made by two lines of ships, Viking and Silja that also transport heavy vehicles like trucks loaded and passengers.

O bar de gelo

Ontem, por volta das 8h00 da noite, o tempo melhorou e saiu um sol lindo. É isso o que acontece nas terras das noites brancas, o dia chuvoso e escuro e a noite ensolarada.

Yesterday, around 8:00 pm the weather improved and the sun came out beautifully. That's what happens on the land of white nights, a dark and rainy day and a sunny evening.

Saí para procurar o bar de gelo que eu tanto queria conhecer. Chegando lá encontrei as portas fechadas. Fui perguntar no bar em frente que horas o bar de gelo iria abrir e para a minha decepção descobri que o bar só funciona às sextas e sábados depois das 23h00. Conversei um pouco com o turco que me deu a informação e disse que talvez o bar “derreta” após o funcionamento e precise ser refeito durante a semana. I went out to look for the ice bar which I would like so much to see. Once I arrived there the doors were closed. I asked to a person at the bar in front the time the ice bar was going to open. I was informed that the bar only opens Fridays and Saturdays after 11:00pm. I talked a bit to the Turkish man who gave me the information and said to him that perhaps the bar "melts" right after it operates and needs to be frozen during the week.

Embaixo do nome do bar estava escrito “Copacabana” que o rapaz não soube me explicar a razão. Talvez queiram mostrar o contraste entre uma praia que todo mundo quase derrete de tanto calor e um bar que quase congela até os clientes. It is written "Copacabana" under the bar´s name. The young man did not know to explain to me the reason of it. I said that they may want to show the contrast between a beach where everyone almost melts due to the heat and a bar that nearly freezes all customers.

Como cheguei aqui em Helsinki no domingo e vou para a Rússia na próxima sexta-feira de manhã não terei oportunidade de conhecer o bar de gelo nesta viagem.  As I got here in Helsinki on Sunday and I will travel to Russia next Friday morning I will not have the chance to visit the ice bar on this trip.

 Ao lado do bar tem uma padaria deliciosa. Next to the bar there is a delicious bakery.

No caminho de volta comprei cerejas importadas da Espanha. Cheguei ao hotel quase meia noite e estava ainda claro. Não sei quantos quilômetros andei, mas as minhas pernas ardiam quando fui dormir. On the way back I bought cherries imported from Spain. I arrived at the hotel almost midnight and there was day light. I have no idea how many miles I walked, but my legs were painful when I went to sleep.

Uma máquina cheia de flores

O dia em Helsinki amanheceu chuvoso, ventando e a temperatura era de 12C em pleno verão. Dormi até mais tarde na esperança que as condições climáticas melhorassem. Como a chuva não dava trégua fui procurar um lugar para almoçar e também para comprar um guarda-chuva. It was rainy and a windy day in Helsinki. The temperature was 12C even though it is summer. I slept until late hoping the weather would improve a bit. As the rain did not stop I left the hotel to find out a place to have lunch and also buy an umbrella.

Helsinki é uma cidade que convive com um inverno longo e rigoroso e por isso foi totalmente planejada para o frio. Nas estações de metrô há ruas subterrâneas com muitas lojas, restaurantes e cafés.  Eu estava em uma destas estações quando me deparei com uma máquina cheia de flores. Em cidades grandes é comum as pessoas comprarem refrigerantes, doces e livros nas máquinas, mas flores naturais eu nunca tinha visto. Os buques de rosas e crisântemos giram dentro da máquina e para comprar é só digitar a letra da prateleira e o número do buque. Um buque de rosas custa 20 Euros e o de crisântemo 10 Euros. Ao lado da máquina há sacolas de papel para carregar as flores. Helsinki is a city that has to deal with a long and hard winter. It was planned and built for the cold weather.  In the metro stations there are a kind of underground streets with many shops, restaurants and cafes. I was in one of these stations when I came across to a machine full of flowers. In big cities it is common for people to buy soft drinks, candy and books from vendor machines but natural flowers I had ever seen. The bouquets of roses and chrysanthemums spin inside the machine and in order to buy it you just have to type the shelf´s letter and the number of the bouquet. A bouquet of roses costs 20 Euros and chrysanthemum costs 10 Euros. Next to the vendor machine there are paper bags to carry the flowers.

Aterrissando em Helsinki

Foram mais de 22horas de viagem de São Paulo até Helsinki, 14 horas de voo e finalmente ontem coloquei os meus pés em solo finlandês. O aeroporto é moderno e logo na chegada se percebe  como é a vida em um país onde praticamente não existe burocracia. Não é preciso preencher nenhum cartão de imigração e o funcionário apenas pergunta o motivo da visita e o tempo de permanência no país. As informações são registradas no computador e em menos de um minuto o visitante já está liberado. I took me more than 22 hours journey from São Paulo to Helsinki, 14 hours flight until finally yesterday I step on Finnish land. The airport is modern and soon one can realize what life is like in a country where there is virtually no bureaucracy. There is no need to fill out immigration card and the official just asked me the purpose of my visit and the length of my stay in the country. The information is recorded on the computer and in less than a minute the visitor is ready to visit the country.

Antes de tomar um ônibus até o centro da cidade fui ao centro de informações turísticas para pegar o mapa de Helsinki e perguntar a localização do Bar de Gelo que quero conhecer. O funcionário ficou surpreso com a minha pergunta e foi checar na internet se existia mesmo em Helsinki o tal bar do gelo. É lógico que ele encontrou e se desculpou por não conhecer. Before taking a bus to the city center I went to the tourist information desk to get the map of Helsinki and ask the location of the Ice Bar that I want to visit. The clerk was surprised by my question and had to check on the internet as he was not aware of it. Needles to say he found it and apologized for doubting me.

Cheguei ao meu hotel por volta das 19h00 horário local, mas como aqui é verão mesmo fazendo 15C, há poucas horas de noite. Saí para comer e ainda era dia, mas não me dei conta que já passava das 22h30 e não encontrei nenhum restaurante ou café aberto. I arrived at my hotel at around 19:00 local time, but as it is summer here even though the temperature is 15C and there are few hours of night. I went out to eat and as there was still daylight,  I did not realize it was past 10:30 pm. I did not find any restaurant or café open.

Fiquei andando pela cidade vazia, olhando vitrines e fotografando com a luz das noites brancas. O deslumbramento era tamanho que esqueci que estava com fome. So I walked through the empty city, looking at shop windows and shooting with the light of the white nights. I was so fascinated that I forgot that I was hungry.

Em Londres, no aeroporto de Heathrow.

Cheguei à Inglaterra as 7h30 da manhã, horário local, no terminal 5 do Aeroporto de Heathrow. Tomei um trem e um ônibus para ir para o terminal 3 de onde sairia as 12h30 o meu voo para a Finlândia. I arrived in England at 7.30 am, local time at Heathrow Airport terminal 5. I took a train and a bust to go to Terminal 3 from where I would catch my flight at 12.30 to Finland.

Enquanto aguardava a minha conexão andei pelo aeroporto, visitei as livrarias e encontrei uma das minhas paixões da época que era estudante e morava em Londres: a batata inglesa com sal e vinagre. Não costumo comer quase nada artificial, mas esta batata eu não resisto. While I was waiting for my connection I walked around the airport, visited some bookstores and found one of my favorite bites when I was a student in London: English salt & vinegar chips. I do not  usually eat processed food, but this one I cannot avoid.

No moderno aeroporto de Heathrow não existe conexão de internet gratuita, há sofisticadas telas de LCD e teclados disponíveis ao custo de 1,00 libra esterlina (Cerca de R$3.00) para usar 10 minutos. Como os minutos começam a ser debitados a partir do momento da conexão consegui apenas escrever um email para a minha mãe. Heathrow Airport is very modern but it does not offer free internet access. There are sophisticated LCD screens and keyboards available for 1 pound per 10 minutes of usage. As the minutes starts to be charged as soon as it connects I only had time to write an email to my mother.

Embarcando para a Finlândia

Minhas férias anuais começam na próxima segunda-feira e embarco hoje para a Europa. Trabalho em um Consulado e mesmo sendo funcionária do governo de outro país, seguimos a legislação brasileira que nos dá direito a 30 dias de férias por ano.  My annual leave starts next Monday and today I am travelling to Europe.  I work for a Consulate and even though I am employed by the government of a foreign country, we follow the Brazilian legislation that entitles us to 30 days vacation per year.

Comecei a organizar a minha viagem em janeiro 2012 porque gosto de planejar, estudar cada país que vou visitar e escolher as cidades que quero conhecer. Faço uma pesquisa detalhada de cada lugar que irei antes de definir o bairro que vou procurar um hotel, por exemplo. Aprendo antes de sair do Brasil a me locomover nas cidades e geralmente decoro algumas linhas de metrô e as principais estações, assim quando chego já me sinto familiarizada com o lugar. Como viajo sozinha, sem apoio de nenhuma agência de viagem, organização é fundamental. I began to organize my trip in January 2012 because I like to plan, study each country that I will go and choose the cities I want to visit.  I search it carefully before selecting the neighborhood that I want to book a room in a hotel, for example. I learn how to get around the city I am going to visit by memorizing underground lines and stations so that once I arrive in the place I am already familiar with it. As I am an independent traveler and I do not have assistance from any travel agency, organization is the key for a successful trip.

No inicio do ano coloquei na tela do meu computador o mapa mundi e fiquei olhando os muitos países que já visitei e os outros tantos que quero conhecer. Pensei bastante antes de definir o meu roteiro que será o seguinte:  At the beginning of the year I put on my computer screen the world map and looked at the several countries I've visited and the many others I want to go. It took me a while to decide my itinerary as follows.

De São Paulo vou para a Finlândia conhecer Helsinki, a capital do designer. Vou de trem da Finlândia para a Rússia para visitar  São Petersburgo, a terra de Dostoiévski.  Da Rússia vou para a Suécia e me hospedarei em Estocolmo. Sigo para a Noruega e lá vou visitar a pequena Alesund que descobri enquanto pesquisava sobre a Norueda e me apaixonei pela cidade. Ficarei lem Alesund 4 dias e depois viajarei para Bergen. Para finalizar a visita aos países nórdicos vou para a Dinamarca. Antes de retornar ao Brasil quero rever Londres, a cidade que morei  e  é como se fosse a minha casa na Europa. From São Paulo I will go to Finland in order to visit Helsinki, the capital of the designer. I will take a train from Finland to Russia to visit St. Petersburg, the land of Dostoevsky. From Russia I will travel to Sweden where I will stay in Stockholm. Then I will go to Norway to visit a small town called Alesund that I found out while researching about Norway and I fell in love with it. I'll be there for 4 days and then travel to Bergen. I will go to Denmark to end my visit to the Nordic countries. Before returning to Brazil I want to stay a few days in London, the city that I lived in the past and is like my home in Europe.

Comigo levo apenas o meu equipamento fotográfico, um notebook e uma pequena mala. Não viajo para fazer compras e carregar sacolas. Viajo para aprender, para apreciar as belezas da natureza, conhecer outros povos, culturas  e para ser menos ignorante sobre o mundo em que vivemos. I just take with me my photography equipment, a notebook and a small suitcase. I do not travel for shopping and carrying bags. I travel to learn, to appreciate the beauty of nature, to meet people, understand other cultures and become less ignorant about the world we live in. 

E lá vou eu de novo mundo afora!!
