Queria registrar aquela vista que me parecia tão especial. My last trip to France was in September 2008 and I visited the house that Claude Monet, the impressionist painter lived for many years. In the house there are objects and furniture that belonged to Monet and it is not allowed to take pictures. As I walked around the house, I thought about asking the security man for permission to take a photo of a garden seen through the bedroom window of Monet. The view looked so special to me and I wanted to record it.

I don’t speak French fluently but the little I know is good enough for me ask basic questions in French instead of doing it in English. Mentally I repeated the question to myself and smiling I struggled to pronounce each word the best way I could. The security man was making a point to show how annoyed he was by the visitors, but even so I decided to take the risk and ask him if I could take the picture. If we do not ask a question we will never know the answer. I got the permission to shoot, but I could only take one photo quickly. The windows were closed and that is why the picture has a yellow stain. As a matter of common sense I did not even consider to ask the security man to open the window.

I spent most of the day walking and taking photos of the beautiful garden that Monet cultivated and immortalized in his paintings. The garden is home to several flowers and the colors are so intense that I just forgot about time. It was past 3:00 pm when I realized I hadn’t even had lunch.  For me one of the most impressive moments of my visit was when I found  the Japanese bridge that I had seen so many times in the books.

Before crossing the small bridge, I carefully watched the sun light reflected in the water and the variety of colors and shapes that the shadow of the flowers produced in the water. I was wondering how many hours Monet spent every day at that gardening looking at his flowers and painting it.  Monet was considered the painter of light, and once he said: “Everyone discuss my art and pretends to understand, as if it was necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love.”

Giverny is a small town, very charming and has about 600 inhabitants. The town is located in the Normandy region which is close to Paris. I was traveling alone in Europe and was very easy to go to Giverny. In Paris I went by underground up to Saint Lazare station. It is a very big station and many trains departure from Saint Lazare to France’s countryside. I took a train to Vernon.

It is possible to choose a fast train or the ones that travel at low speed and stop in several towns and villages. I preferred the train that would make the longest journey and slowly so that I would be able to enjoy the scenery. The trip to Vernon took me almost two hours. Next to Vernon train station I caught a bus to Giverny. Nearly all the passengers were tourists and the ticket to Giverny is sold by the bus driver.  I received a brochure with the buses schedule that always meet with the trains departures to Paris.

I went back to Paris at the end of the day carrying with me a little of the perfume of the flowers from Monet's garden and in my memory all the beauty of Giverny. The following day I went to visit Musée d'Orsay just to see Monet paintings that I love so much.
